Community cleanup scheduled for Saturday, July 31

The Alexandria Area Four Safe Streets Program will sponsor a community cleanup from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 31.

The kickoff will begin at 8 a.m. at Volunteers of America, 3900 Lee St., in Alexandria.

The cleanup will begin at the intersection of Lee and Dallas streets. The cleanup areas will include Lee Street Extension, Baker Addition, Evergreen Addition, Duhon Street area and all streets behind the Louisiana Technical College.

The cleanup will end at the old Jimmie Holt Truck Stop.

Boyce man arrested on warrant for burglary charges

Robert L. Maraio, 47, of 84 Vanassellberg Road, Boyce, was arrested Friday, July 18, on charges of aggravated burglary, aggravated battery, harassing telephone language and two counts of flight from an officer, according to the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The charges stem from a July 12 call to the sheriff’s office accusing Maraio of entering a Vanasselberg Road home without the owner’s permission and threatening the homeowner.

After a search for Maraio, the sheriff’s detectives issued a warrant for his arrest. He was arrested and booked into the Rapides Parish Jail and is being held on a $101,500 bond.

RPSO seeks information on 15-year-old missing since July 2

The Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office is seeking help in locating 15-year-old Adrinna S. Quinney, who was last seen about 6 p.m. July 2 at Skateville on Louisiana Highway East.

She is described as being 5 feet 3 inches, weighing 110 pounds. She was last seen wearing a red and pink top, black leggings with black shoes.

RPSO deputy accused in hit and run that leaves one dead

Rapides Parish Sheriff’s deputy Marvin Thomas, 40, of 6333 Deerfield Drive in Alexandria was arrested Tuesday afternoon after the vehicle he was driving early Tuesday morning struck a pedestrian near the intersection of Lee Street and Industrial Drive, according to the Alexandria Police.

Acadian Ambulance pronounced the pedestrian, whose identity has not been released, dead at the scene about 12:39 a.m., the police reports.

Thomas is accused of having his wife confess that she was driving a 2004 Nissan Altima at the time of the accident. He allegedly told her to make the confession because he had been drinking and that he didn’t want to get in trouble with his job since he was already on probation.

The wife allegedly later said it was her husband who was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident.

The report indicates that the pedestrian didn’t die from the impact of the vehicle hitting him.

A second vehicle, driven by Kendrick Hunter, 22, of 2509 Culpepper Drive, Apt. 88, ran over the pedestrian as he was being attended to by witnesses of the first impact.

Thomas was booked into the Rapides Parish Jail on charges of felony hit and
run and obstruction of justice.

Hunter was charged with one count of felony hit and run.

Pitkin woman killed as vehicle crashes into tree

VERNON PARISH – On Friday, July 16, 2010, at 12:09 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to a single-vehicle crash on LA 10, mile post 26.6. Preliminary investigation revealed Stacy Weldon, 33, of Pitkin, was driving east in a 2004 GMC Envoy. The vehicle exited the roadway and impacted a tree on the passenger side. The vehicle then rotated and vaulted after impact with the tree and traveled an additional 50 feet before striking a group of trees on the driver’s side.

Weldon was pronounced dead at the scene. Routine toxicology test results are pending and the crash remains under investigation.

Troop E troopers have investigated 34 fatal crashes for the year of 2010, resulting in 39 fatalities.

Pineville man killed in Avoyelles Parish crash

On Thursday, July 15, at 9:35 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to a single-vehicle crash on LA 454, mile post 9.7. Preliminary investigation revealed the driver, Robert Gibson Loudin, 39, of Pineville, was traveling west when he lost control of the 1988 Ford pick-up he was driving. The vehicle exited the roadway, re-entered the roadway, and then overturned several times. The vehicle continued traveling on its roof, again left the roadway, then impacted a tree on the passenger side.

Loudin, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene. Routine toxicology test results are pending and the crash remains under investigation.

Troop E troopers have investigated 33 fatal crashes for the year of 2010, resulting in 38 fatalities.

RPSO arrests 10 on drug charges

The Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office, in its Operation 90-Day Heat, recently arrested 11 people on drug charges, according to Sheriff Charles F. Wagner Jr.

In the last couple of weeks,  agents concentrated on the methamphetamine trade in Rapides Parish.  The following were arrested:
