Rapides Parish students were among 350 youth who participated in the annual Family and Youth Conference at the Southern University Smith-Brown Memorial Union held June 17-19.
The youth attended seminars and workshops that included topics on technology, 4-H, juvenile justice and proper hand-washing techniques.
The theme of the conference was “Inspiring Youth with Tools for Achieving Excellence.”
Retired Lt. Gen. Russel L. Honore was the speaker. He is currently a senior scientist with The Gallup Organization, where is working on developing questions to determine levels of preparedness.
Lt. Gen. Honore emphasized three concepts: do routine things well, don’t be afraid to take on the impossible and do not be afraid even when you are criticized.
Terry Washington, ag agent with Southern University, was responsible for bringing youth from Rapides Parish to the expo.
