A Rapides Parish Jail inmate, who is serving a four-year sentence for a drug charge, was arrested Friday morning when officers allegedly found drugs and cigarettes hidden in his prosthetic leg, said Assistant Chief Herman Walters of the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Inmate Joe Lewis, 42, of Alexandria, was charged with introduction of contraband in a facility and possession of narcotics. He worked as a trusty in the parish courthouse and nearby buildings, Walters said.

During a routine check after Lewis returned to the jail, Walters said, officers allegedly found smoking tobacco, cigarettes and prescription drugs.
