Pineville man accused of shooting wife to death

A Pineville man, who is accused of killing his wife, is in the Rapides Parish Jail on charges of second-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, child desertion and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Joseph Anton Chehardy, 51, 1530 Hickory Hill Rd., allegedly shot his wife, Janeva Lasyone Chehardy, at their home late Wednesday night, said Rapides Parish Sheriff Chuck Wagner. He was arrested early Thursday morning.

Wagner said the incident appeared to have stemmed from domestic violence that escalated.

Two deputies, who were responding to the scene, “had to take evasive action in order to get out of the path of a truck being driven by Chehardy as he was fleeing the scene,” the sheriff said.

Chehardy allegedly ignored commands to get out of the truck resulting in deputies firing shots that hit Chehardy in the leg and a truck’s tire, Wagner said.

A short time later, authorities arrested Chehardy at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital, where he had gone to seek treatment for his gunshot injury.

Chehardy was transferred to another local hospital for treatment.  After being treated and released, Chehardy was booked into the Rapides Parish Jail.
