Jerry Higginbotham, 27, 138 Bilboo Road, Jonesville, and his girlfriend, Amy Breland, 18, 13248 Louisiana  Highway 84, Jena, are accused of using a worthless check to purchase a tractor from a local business, according to the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Both were arrested Friday, April 16, at Higginbotham’s residence. Higginbotham was charged with two counts of felony theft by the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office and outstanding warrants for issuing worthless checks in LaSalle Parish and in Quachita Parish.

Breland, who turned herself in to detectives, was booked into the Rapides Parish Jail for two counts of felony theft.  Breland  used the name  Amy Montie on her checks.

Detectives suspect the pair may have passed fraudulent checks to numerous businesses in the Alexandria area over the last month.

On April 2, a local business sold a tractor to the couple, which allegedly used a worthless $5,000 check to pay for it. When the business discovered the check was worthless, the business couldn’t reach the couple.

RPSO detectives are investigating Higginbotham for other possible scams.  Detectives are asking the public for their help with the investigation.  Higginbotham has a roofing company, Higginbotham Roofing, which is under investigation for fraudulent practices.

Anyone who has had contact with Higginbotham, Breland or Montie, should contact  Detective Chance Cappel with the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office at (318)473-6727.
