Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. members meet in Alexandria

More than 350 members of Louisiana Chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. are in Alexandria through Sunday, March 7 for their annual statewide meeting.

The meeting began Friday, March 5 at the Alexander Fulton Hotel, where activities are  scheduled throughout the day.

At 11 a.m. Saturday, members marched from the hotel on Fourth and Jackson streets to the Downtown Mini Park for a public service activity. The organization has made domestic violence awareness its platform.

Shannon Willis from Turning Point Shelter in Alexandria made a presentation to the group. Chapters donated baskets of toiletries and other essentials to the shelter.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded on Jan. 13, 1913, by 22 collegiate women at Howard University. These students wanted to use their collective strength to promote academic excellence and to provide assistance to persons in need. The first public act performed by the Delta Founders involved their participation in the Women’s Suffrage March in Washington D.C., March 1913. Delta Sigma Theta was incorporated in 1930.

Stephanie Jackson is the president of the Alexandria Alumnae Chapter.

The organization’s 50th National Convention will be held in New Orleans July 29-Aug. 4.
