The Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a Deville man who was shot outside of a Billy Evans Road home about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, said Maj. Jerome Hopewell.
Authorities responded to a 911 call to find Ronnie Dale Hewlett, 25, of 651 Gene Gunter Rd., Deville, on the ground with the homeowner performing CPR on him.
According to the homeowner, Hopewell said, the following allegedly occurred:
Hewlett and an acquaintance came to the home and came with the permission of the homeowner’s wife. When the homeowner realized Hewlett was inside of his home, he demanded that he leave immediately.
Hewlett became angry and demanded food and prescription medication. Several more times, the homeowner asked Hewlett to leave his home.
Hewlett’s acquaintance began knocking on the door trying to gain entry. However, Hewlett went outside.
The homeowner reported he saw Hewlett and his acquaintance with their vehicle’s trunk open and walking around his property. At that time, the homeowner armed himself with a handgun and went outside.
Hewlett and his acquaintance got into their vehicle with Hewlett as the driver. Hewlett put the car in reverse and backed up towards the homeowner at a high rate of speed.
The homeowner stepped aside and fired once hitting Hewlett, who continued to drive a short distance down the driveway.
Hewlett was pronounced dead at the scene.
